If you have cat smells (I had 10 cats!!! I know this is an issue) such as a male spraying on smething such as shoes, purses or if you want to remove smoke odors from something (this only works on things that can be placed in a plastic toter.) put about 1 inch of kitty litter (non-clumping) in the bottom of a large plastic storage box, take a grate of some sort, fridge stove whatever you can set something out of the litter with, and let it set in there about a week. It will pull out and absorb horrible scents. If you can set the box outside in the sun - that's even better! This works great on books and musty items too - even horribly stinky shoes!!! To keep shoes fresh, take an old nylon knee-high stocking and fill it partially with litter and stuff it into the shoes overnight, each night!

After you have finished sqeezing the juice of a lemon, put half in your dishwasher and put on quick wash. It's a cheap way to clean your dishwasher and get rid of nasty smells. Fill the other half lemon with salt and sit in the fridge to absorb nasty smells.

An easy way to clean the fridge is to put the shelves in the dishwasher. Remove the top rack of the dishwasher to accommodate the size of the shelves and run it with detergent. Put the top rack back in to wash the smaller door shelves and bins. While the shelves are out you can wipe down the interior. Works for large upright freezers too.

Save money and the environment – dust the back of your fridge. While nobody can see it, the dust on the back of your fridge is making yours inefficient. The science is that the pipes on the back heat up and cool down to keep your fridge at the right temperature. Once they’re covered in dust, which is an insulator, they can’t exchange this heat as well. You’ll save money on electric bills and keep your fridge in better shape as it won’t have to work so hard.

Top butter tip. To stop the butter sliding around the dish, stick a fresh block on after you’ve just removed the dish from the dishwasher, and the heat will make the bottom melt a bit. Stick it back in the fridge and it will reset in to a nice firm base.

If you’ve been putting off de-frosting the fridge for a while, don’t! It’s not nearly as efficient and bad for the environment. I always put it off as it was never empty enough, and I didn’t want to chuck away a load of good food. Then I invested in a cool bag and a couple of ice packs that live in the fridge. Now I can dump all the food in the cool bag with the ice packs, get my defrost done in two hours and everything’s still fine to put back in!
